The initial skatepark design was drawn up after
consultation with the local Penicuik skaters and riders. However,
after the soil tests were conducted for the proposed site the
discovery that the water table was close to the surface meant
that the sunken bowl style design would not be feasible. A new
layout was then designed based on the skatepark being built at
ground level with all features above the ground and landscaped
into the surrounding park. The aim was to try and maintain the
flow of a sunken bowl style park.
The skatepark design incorporates a variety of bowl and street
